In support of sustainable design best practices, Songdo IBD aims to address one of the leading causes of climate change and the air pollution plaguing many Asian cities: automobile emissions.
There is currently one car for every three of Korea's 49 million citizens. Within Songdo IBD, this reliance on the automobile can be greatly reduced. Citywide transportation networks including bus and subway service will provide accessibility and convenience to residents and visitors alike, and bike routes and pedestrian pathways encourage people to walk, bike or use mass transit for their transportation needs. Planned transportation services include:
- Bus service extend throughout the new city, with bus stops located within one-quarter mile of all residential and commercial buildings.
- An extension of the Incheon subway line that is directly linked to the SMRT provide easy access to Seoul and Incheon within a half-mile walk of most residential areas.
- Segregated bike lanes and sidewalks adjacent to all the main streets provide safe and comfortable pedestrian-friendly environments and accessibility across the new city.
- Water taxi services will be implemented throughout the canal system
