Incheon Bridge Brings the World Closer to Korea with Improved Logistics
INCHEON, South Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Incheon Bridge made history as it opened to public traffic on October 19 last year. It is, after all, the longest bridge in Korea and the fifth longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.
The 21.38 kilometer long expressway connects Incheon Airport on Youngjong Island to the newly developed international commercial area of Songdo. To complete the construction on time, the project was executed as fast-track in which design and construction are done in parallel.
When all is said and done, its most prized feature is the pylons. At 238.5 meters, the two inverted Y-shaped pylons are almost as tall as the country's tallest skyscraper. The cable-stayed bridge consists of two pylons, with 208 cables holding up the bridge deck. A careful calculation based on geometry allows the bridge withstand the effects of strong wind and earthquake. After all, public safety is something that cannot be compromised.
The 21.38 km long roadway rises to a height of 74 meters above sea level. When you cross the spectacular bridge feeling the cool wind on your skin, it just blows your mind beyond description. As night approaches, it reveals a beauty quite different than during the daytime hours. You see the beautiful glow of the setting sun, and the picturesque effects conjured up by colorful lights hanging from the pylons.
On September 15 2009, its value was clearly demonstrated during the Asia Pacific Cities Summit. About 150 city representatives and business leaders were able to arrive at Youngjong Island on time for the Milano Design City opening ceremony after wrapping up the summit meeting. Prior to its official opening date, the city allowed a temporary use of the bridge for the delegates, who marveled at its splendor. It truly was an impossible feat made possible by high-tech engineering that overcame enormous odds like huge waves, gusty wind, and fog.
It takes about 20 minutes to cross the length of it. The bridge clearly shortens the travel time between the airport and Sondo, and helps improve the nation's logistics competitiveness. Indeed, its bright lights illuminate not only the surrounding landscape, but also the future of Incheon and Korea.
